Getting Certified
I got scuba certified in September of 1995 by my engineering
colleague and buddy, Curt Harpold. Curt is a master diving
instructor who has been diving for over 25 years.

Curt Harpold.
This is a shot of me and my classmate, Bill Downer, in the
pool for our treading-water test.
Curt can control his buoyancy to such a degree that he
can actually hover upside down.
Looe Key
Looe Key is an undersea nature preserve about half an hour north of Key West. Me, Curt Harpold, Ray Voight, and Bill Downer spent a three-day weekend down there prior to Sun's national sales meeting in January 1996.

Rainbow River
Rainbow River is fed by fresh water that enters the ground in Tennessee, gets filtered through rock all the way down to Florida, and bubbles up through the sand here. That means it's always 72 degrees year-round and phenomenally clear. We did a drift dive from the mouth of the river all the way down in January 1996.

This is me snorkeling around at the mouth of the river.
Curt Harpold got this beautiful shot of an alligator gar
against the sunlight.
DiveQuest at Epcot Center
Beginning in October of 1995, Disney World's Epcot Center has allowed scuba diving in the Living Seas Experience, the world's largest salt water aquarium. You guessed it: me, Ray, Curt, and Bill got wet on January 10th, 1996.
A shot of me and a large sea turtle.
My buddy Curt.
The tank tries to look as realistic as possible, down to
a fake shipwreck with pieces taken from real wrecks.
This is me and Orson, a big ugly eight-foot-long grouper.
Orson's the one on the left.
Bill Downer entertains restaurant-goers on the other
side of the glass with a flip.
A shot of me in the reef.
One of the hundreds of manta rays in the tank.
There is one section of the tank that the sharks love
to swim through all day, nicknamed ``Shark Alley.''
Me goofing off with the tourists behind the glass.
Monterey
Some shots of the me, Curt Harpold, Ray Voight, and Chris Hanson on the Cypress Sea out of Monterey in March 1996. I was out in California on a job rotation and the other guys were there for technical training.
Curt Harpold, dubbed ``French Tickler Man'' because his
hooded dry suit makes him look like a condom.
